About Me
The first thing I learned about building websites didn’t involve writing any code.
I was in college, working at my uncle’s company on the side, and I expected my first day to be a crash course in HTML tags. Instead he sat me down for 45 minutes and talked about web standards, semantics, quality and accessibility. That was 2009. I’ve been building for the web ever since, and I still work the way he taught me on that first day.
Where it started
Before websites, it was math. A school friend and I used to turn our homework into little programs in BASIC, and we loved it. Later I fell for C, and later still for the web.
In 2012 I joined a Los Angeles agency from the other side of the world, so my workday began when most people at home were going to bed. I stayed more than ten years and grew from web developer to Director of Web Design & Development, leading a team of more than 70 people. I reviewed thousands of technical tests in that time.
Fun Fact: More than 90% of the candidates couldn’t build a simple web page with good quality code, which is why fundamentals still come first for me.
What I do now
I’m an eCommerce solutions architect in Los Angeles, working with merchants from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies on Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, Shopware, WooCommerce and Magento. My favorite part of a project comes before the first line of code, while the setup is still messy and the job is deciding what should be headless, what should be custom and what can come off the shelf. I’m a Shopware Certified Solution Architect, BigDev and B2B certified on BigCommerce, and I hold a Shopify Liquid Storefronts badge and a Claude certification.
I’m optimistic about AI in a practical way. It makes good teams faster, and agentic commerce, where AI agents shop on a customer’s behalf, has a lot of my attention right now. The judgment still has to come from someone who has done the work.
I also make time for people who are just starting out. I advise small business owners through a Small Business Development Center in California, I mentor developers, and I made the first batch of my BigCommerce development course free.
Off the clock
Away from the screen, I’m usually in the kitchen cooking Indian food by trial and error, or out on a hike. I love to travel, I read a lot of biographies, and I switch between English, Punjabi and Hindi.
If you’re wrestling with a tricky store, or just starting out and want to talk shop, I’d like to hear from you on Twitter or through the contact page.
